Pac 12 Football Teams Oregon State
Junior Cody Vaz steps in for the tenth ranked Oregon State Beavers this weekend against the BYU Cougars after quarterback Sean Mannion was injured last week against the Washington State Cougars. It will be Vaz’s first start since high school and his first action in a game since 2010.
He’ll have some pretty big shoes to fill as Mannion was playing phenomenally this season. His 339.5 passing yards per game rank second in the Pac 12 and sixth in the country. He has thrown for 1,358 yards with seven touchdowns and four interceptions while leading Oregon State to their highest ranking since the 2001 Fiesta Bowl.
Add in a difficult road game, and Vaz’s first start doesn’t look like it could get much tougher. BYU sports one of the stingiest defenses in the country, allowing just 8.8 points per game, good for third best in college football
. They’ve surrendered just 10 points in their last three games combined, and have allowed more than 10 points just once at home this season en route to a sparkling 4-0 home record.
So no pressure, Cody. Just the hopes and dreams of Corvallis of a BCS run and the first 5-0 start in school history since 1939. That’s all.
That isn’t to say that Oregon State doesn’t have an excellent chance at winning even without a stellar performance from Vaz. The Beavers have a stingy defense of their own and the Cougars have not exactly been lighting up the scoreboard. Take away the blowout over the Hawaii Warriors, and BYU has scored just 12 points over two games against the Boise State Broncos and Utah State Aggies.
