Just 19 years old, and four days shy of turning 20, Oregon State defensive tackle Fred Thompson has passed away, multiple media outlets are reporting.
OSU officials confirmed that the freshman collapsed while playing basketball and was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead late last night. The initial cause of the 6-4, 317-pound freshman’s death is believed to be a heart attack.
The school will hold a press conference Thursday, although a specific time has yet to be designated. Head coach Mike Riley was away from campus recruiting and unavailable for comment.
